Entertainment

At the end of a long day, week, or semester, you may feel the need to reward yourself. You deserve a treat, don't you? Sure you do.

Spend money to save money?
Those books of coupons that organizations often sell door-to-door for fundraising campaigns can quickly pay for themselves. They offer substantial discounts on food, services, and entertainment. Often these coupons take the form of a 2-for-1 discount, which means you'll want to invite a friend to join you, and split the bill. Book prices continually get lower as the year progresses and the expiry dates approach (Coupons are good until November of the book year). The books are available online, and you can preview what's inside to help you decide if it's worthwhile. (Note that the movie passes advertised are not available to Canada.)

How does the Opera sound?
The Montreal opera offers free admission to select shows to students. Just present yourself at the ticket office at Place-des-Arts with proof of Student status to reserve your ticket (subject to availability). Call the box office at (514) 985-2258 for details. The cheapest seats in the venue normally cost $43. We much prefer free.

That's the ticket!
Everything at the dollar cinema at Namur metro station costs $1: admission, drinks, and popcorn. Their systems may not be state-of the-art, and the location may be a little out-of-the-way, but the price is certainly right! If they're playing something that interests you, they're certainly worth a look!

Other free events...
Montreal is a great city for festivals, especially in the summer. If you're around then, be sure to check out some of the free outdoor events. But even in the winter months there are free events to be discovered. The CSU sponsors free concerts at the beginning of the school year, and various groups within the university often host free film screenings. Pick up a free copy of the student Agenda at the CSU in September for listings. Cinema Politica is a free political film series which screens films at Concordia at 7p.m. in H-110 on Mondays during the semester. For lovers of classical music, free performances at local Universities can be found listed in La Scena Musicale.

Downloading ill legal music
Yes, I realize everyone probably already knows how to download music for free. But did you know you can do it legally? Every week the iTunes music store offers a free download. iTunes, of course, is also a free download from the Apple website. Want more choices? Amazon.com has a wide range of selections available for free download.
